WHO-5 Well-Being Index

Measure your well-being over the last two weeks with five short statements and track how it changes over time. Your answers stay on your device.

What is the WHO-5 for?

Most mental health scales ask about problems. The WHO-5 starts from the other side: cheerfulness, calm, energy, waking up rested and a daily life full of interest. Five short statements take a snapshot of your overall well-being over the last two weeks.

Because it is short, it is well suited to regular repetition. Measuring every two to four weeks lets you see how changes in your life are reflected in your well-being.

How are scores interpreted?

Percentage scoreMeaning
51–100Well-being range. The higher the score, the better the well-being.
29–50Low well-being. A more detailed assessment for depression is recommended.
0–28Very low well-being. Seeing a professional about possible depression is recommended.

Even if your total is high, any item scored 0 or 1 deserves attention of its own.

Frequently asked questions

Is the WHO-5 a depression test?
Not directly. The WHO-5 measures general well-being with positive statements. Low scores, however, suggest that a more detailed assessment for depression may be needed, so it is also widely used for screening.
How is the score calculated?
Each of the five items is scored from 0 to 5. The raw score ranges from 0 to 25 and is multiplied by 4 to give a percentage score from 0 to 100. A higher score means better well-being.
What change is meaningful?
In the literature, a change of 10 points in the percentage score is considered clinically meaningful. If you save your results, you'll see the difference from your previous measurement in the result box.
Who can see saved results?
Only you. If you choose to save, the score and date are written to this browser's local storage and never sent to a server. You can clear them with one click using “Delete history”.
