GAD-7 anxiety screening

Assess how much worry and anxiety have taken up your life over the last two weeks with seven short questions. Your answers are never sent anywhere.

What is the GAD-7 for?

The GAD-7 (Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7) is a short, reliable scale developed to screen quickly for anxiety symptoms. Its seven items ask about the last two weeks and produce a score from 0 to 21.

Anxiety often starts in the body: tense shoulders, shallow breathing, a mind that won't go quiet. This scale turns that diffuse feeling into a picture you can name.

How are scores interpreted?

ScoreAnxiety levelGeneral advice
0–4MinimalNo clear sign of an anxiety problem.
5–9MildKeep observing; breathing and relaxation techniques may help.
10–14ModerateTalking to a mental health professional is recommended.
15–21SevereA professional assessment and support plan are important.

What can I do in an anxious moment?

  • Slow your breathing. Lengthening the out-breath activates the parasympathetic nervous system. Try the 4-7-8 breathing exercise.
  • Give worry a time slot. Setting a 15-minute “worry time” each day can stop worry from spreading across the whole day.
  • Name the feeling. Simply saying “I'm anxious” can lower its intensity. A mood tracker is a good place to start.

Frequently asked questions

What does the GAD-7 measure?
The GAD-7 screens for the core symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder: constant worry, being unable to control worry, restlessness, tension and irritability. It is also a reasonable first screen for panic disorder, social anxiety and post-traumatic stress, but it can't tell them apart.
Does a score of 10 mean something special?
Yes. In research, 10 or more is the most commonly used cut-off for clinically significant anxiety. If you score above it, talking to a professional is recommended.
Is anxiety always bad?
No. Anxiety is a natural emotion that warns us of danger and gets us moving. The problem starts when it becomes disproportionate, constant and starts to narrow your life.
